The business environment that engineers enter into upon graduation is changing rapidly. In this new marketplace, the ability to grasp engineering principles and design strategies is no longer adequate to ensure a student's success once entering the workworld. Corporations expect more. They expect students to have the ability to grasp the big picture of the business. In order to excel, graduates are often required to have an understanding of the business world around them, beyond what is taught in classrooms. Many of the leading corporations in the world today have found a way to incorporate engineering principles into their business strategies, as well as using an understanding of the business plan to drive their engineering ventures.

Recognizing this need, motivated, business-minded engineering students from the University of Illinois formed the National Organization for Business and Engineering (NOBE) with the help of students at Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Through this organization, we work with corporate executives from around the world to present students with an opportunity to experience the business world, which they will inevitably find themselves a part of upon graduation. We offer students significant exposure to workshops, networking opportunities, case studies, competitions, and more which will prepare them for their career.

Our goal is to expose students to the concept of the Business Engineer—a professional who uses a strong engineering background to analytically solve the problems that they will face in the business world—regardless of their specific field. Many of the top business executives started their career as engineers. It was this strong base that allowed them to excel in their career, and we would like to give students all around the country the tools that they will need to do the same.
